Beginner's Revit

Projects

I plan to document my journey from an AutoCAD user with 30 years experience. I enjoy coding and this website will be a resource for myself to reference and hopefully help other individuals that want to learn.

A list of a few topics to start covering:

I believe taking these steps first will help understand the fundamentals of organizing a drawing set. Later I will test linking Revit models that I receive from Architect's.

The Conversion Issue

Before starting a new project Revit LT converts every file I receive from any Architect. I still do not understand the purpose of this step. It happens on every version of Revit LT I use. It is hard to find any real information for the LT version because most Architect's are using the full version of Revit. This process creates a copy of each model file you receive. Some projects have several linked revit files meaning this will take space in your computer but also time to convert each file. Coming from AutoCAD and using Xref files, this never took long to open large projects. I hope to one day learn more about this process and find ways to streamline it.

About

I have been using AutoCAD for 30 years starting with the DOS version. I recall using a tablet at the time instead of a mouse to select menu items. The Windows version shortly released after I started and I quickly adapted and preferred using a mouse. It was dog slow compared to the DOS version but it was the future. Now in 2025 I embark on a new journey to fully learn Revit.
